Chinese Immigration and Visa Services

Over the last three years, Duke has developed support to assist faculty and staff in securing the appropriate travel documentation to enter a foreign jurisdiction when traveling on Duke business (whether for a short stay or long-term assignment).  For the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and travelers to Duke Kunshan University (DKU), there are well-defined procedures to support the process.

For citizens of the U.S. and many other western countries (e.g., Canada, UK, Australia, etc.), a “visa” is required in advance of travel to the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

A “visa” is a stamp endorsed in the applicant’s passport and is a conditional authorization given by a competent authority of a country for a person who is not a citizen of that country to enter its territory and to remain there for a limited duration. Typically countries attach conditions to their visas such as the type of activity allowed for the traveler to engage in while visiting, limits on the duration of stay, territory the visa covers, dates of validity and number of entries allowed. Visas are essentially permission to enter a country and, as is the case in the PRC, are distinct from actual formal permission for an alien to live and work in the country. Visas are subject to the permission of the immigration officer reviewing the application as well as by the official at the port of entry. A visa can be denied or revoked at any time the host country wishes.

It is essential to begin the visa process as early as possible. Short-term visits to the PRC generally require a business or exchange type visa (categories “F” and “M”) and long-term assignees (e.g. expatriates whose stay will be 90-days or more in a calendar year) are required to undergo immigration to China for work (entering under a “Z” or the new “R” category of visa).
